Dr. Applonie’s practice concentrates on orthopedic shoulder and elbow surgery. He performs Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement, Total Shoulder Replacement, Rotator Cuff Injuries, Shoulder Arthroscopy, Total Elbows, Ulnar Nerve Decompression procedures, and other surgical and non-surgical shoulder pain complications.

Dr. Applonie joined Capital Surgical Associates in 2019. He is excited to offer expert and personalized minimally invasive shoulder and elbow surgical care to the Boise area as a member of Capital Surgical. He is Board Eligible by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and is a candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Shoulder and Elbow Society.
Dr. Applonie has immediate availability and welcomes all types of insurances. Dr. Applonie has hospital privileges at Treasure Valley Hospital, St. Lukes, St. Alphonsus, and West Valley Medical Center.

Shoulder Surgery Education
Dr. Applonie graduated summa cum laude from Idaho Falls High School in 2003. He then attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where he received a bachelor of science in Business management with an emphasis in entrepreneurship in 2009. With a desire to utilize his business skills in medicine, he received his medical degree from AT Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2013.
Shoulder Surgery Experience
Dr. Applonie completed his orthopaedic surgery residency in 2018 at Michigan State University-McLaren Macomb Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, providing him a strong background in general orthopaedics. He served as the chief resident during his final year of residency. With a continued interest in complex shoulder and elbow surgery, Dr. Applonie completed his shoulder and elbow fellowship in 2019 working with and learning from leaders in the field, Dr. Theodore Blaine M.D. and Dr. Gus Mazzocca M.D. During the year of fellowship, he learned shoulder replacement techniques for both the active and the elderly, arthroscopic repairs of athletic and work-related injuries of the rotator cuff and labrum, and elbow procedures from ligament reconstruction to elbow replacements.
An Idaho Native
Ryan Applonie, D.O. is an Idaho native. Raised in Idaho Falls, he enjoys the many activities and adventures that can be found in or around Idaho—skiing Sun Valley and the Tetons, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking the Sawtooths and camping. He is an avid soccer fan and continues to play it competitively. He and his wife, a Treasure Valley native, have four daughters.
Dr. Applonie returned to Idaho after obtaining his medical education and orthopaedic surgery training throughout the Midwest and Northeast having completed the Connecticut Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship with Drs. Blaine and Mazzocca.
